Peter is een long term survivor, zoals dat heet. Ruim 25 jaar geleden kwam hij uit de kast als homo en 20 jaar geleden werd hij opzettelijk besmet met hiv, destijds praktisch een doodvonnis. Maar er zijn meer heftige gebeurtenissen die zijn leven op zijn kop zetten. Peter Positief doet zijn bijnaam eer aan: de slachtofferrol past hem niet. In het gelijknamige boek lees je zijn openhartige levensverhaal. Met zijn positieve instelling ziet hij iedere belemmering als een kans om alles uit het leven te halen en inspireert hij iedereen om zich heen.

Natuurlijk, de wereld is aan de optimisten. Maar wat doe je wanneer je dokter je op een dag meedeelt: ‘Uw bloedresultaten wijzen uit dat u seropositief bent’? Het is augustus 1995 en Peter Dombret, op dat moment net 28 jaar, voelt de hemel op zijn hoofd vallen. In die periode staat de diagnose nog bijna gelijk aan een doodvonnis. Dat zijn toenmalige vriend en grote liefde Tom al langer seropositief is, daarvan op de hoogte is, en hem al dan niet bewust besmet heeft, maakt het drama nog groter. Maar wonderlijk genoeg krabbelt Peter overeind. Eerst aarzelend maar daarna steeds meer vastberaden. Al snel licht hij zijn ouders in, zijn vrienden volgen. ‘Twee tot drie jaar na mijn besmetting lukt het mij om de ziekte een goede plaats te geven’, vertelt hij. ‘Mijn motto is: “Ik ben seropositief, maar laat die “sero” maar vallen.”’ En zo vervelt Peter Dombret tot Peter Positief. Dit boek is zijn verhaal en het klinkt als een lied van hoop en optimisme.

Het boek wisselt persoonlijke ervaringen af met feiten en onderzoeken. Onder meer over:

–  Tertiaire doelgroep: Daarnaast zijn er tal van mensen die zich niet direct betrokken voelen bij de doelgroep, maar die wel houden van autobiografische boeken die controversiële onderwerpen aansnijden. Of die zich graag laten inspireren door positief ingestelde mensen. Ook dit is een serieus aantal potentiële lezers.

HIV lijkt nog voor velen een ‘ver van hun bedshow’, maar het belangt iedereen aan. Laten we HIV uit de wereld helpen. Niet alleen voorbehoedsmiddelen of een vacin. Oplossen en de wereld HIV-vrij maken is niet alleen een droom. Het is een maatschappelijke DOEL!

Naar aanleiding van Wereldaidsdag (1.12) programmeert Canvas op donderdag 4 december ‘The Bloody Truth’, een nieuwe, door Canvas gecoproduceerde documentaire over de oorsprong van het HIV-virus en zijn uitbraak tot pandemische proporties. De film toont hoe een team van wereldvermaarde wetenschappers, onder wie de Vlaming Dirk Teuwen, het HIV-virus, anders dan tot nu toe werd aangenomen, kon traceren tot in het oerwoud van Kameroen in 1908. Ze ontdekten ook een directe link met de koloniale geschiedenis van Centraal Afrika. Hun bevindingen werpen een nieuw licht op de verspreiding van dodelijke virussen, zoals nu ook Ebola.

Peter is a long term survivor, as it is called. More than 25 years ago he came out as gay and 20 years ago (meanwhile more than 25 years), he was deliberately infected with HIV, at the time practically a death sentence. Of course, the world is up to the optimists. But what do you do when your doctor tells you one day, “Your blood results show you are HIV positive”? It is August 1995 and Peter Dombret, just 28 years young at the time, feels the sky falling on his head. In that period, the diagnosis is almost equivalent to a death sentence. “The Bloody Truth”
On the occasion of World AIDS Day (1.12), Canvas is programming “The Bloody Truth” on Thursday December 4, a new documentary co-produced by Canvas about the origin of the HIV virus and its outbreak to pandemic proportions. The film shows how a team of world-renowned scientists, including the Flemish Dirk Teuwen, was able to trace the HIV virus, contrary to what was previously believed, to the jungle of Cameroon in 1908.
